Antoine Griezmann, a forward for Atletico Madrid, pleaded with the team’s supporters on Sunday to pardon him for his 2019 decision to join Barcelona.
The 35-year-old argued that he made a mistake by joining the Catalan team during his final appearance at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano as an Atletico Madrid player.
After a ten-year career spanning two stints with the La Liga powerhouses, the Frenchman will depart Atletico Madrid in the summer to join Major League Soccer team Orlando City.
Griezmann, who assisted Ademola Lookman’s goal in Atletico Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Girona on Sunday, delivered a moving tribute to the home supporters.
“Pardon me,” said Griezmann. I joined Barcelona at a young age and made a mistake.
“The love I experienced here was beyond my comprehension.” I realized my error and made every effort to return and appreciate this place.
“Your love is what matters, even though I didn’t win La Liga or the UEFA Champions League.”
