In order to safeguard vulnerable populations throughout Nigeria’s North Central region, the Labour Party has called for the rapid deployment of security officers and denounced the recent mass killings in Benue State.
The party’s National Caretaker Committee, led by Senator Nenadi Usman, called the attacks “a fresh wave of senseless killings” and called for a thorough investigation and prompt prosecution of those responsible, irrespective of their membership or position.
Usman said in a statement on Monday that he was deeply saddened by the loss of houses and livelihoods, as well as the deaths of over 100 individuals, including women, children, displaced people, and security personnel.
“These were not mere numbers. They were human beings, innocent lives ended brutally,”
“Children who deserved safety were slaughtered. Mothers who should be nurturing families were buried in mass graves. Fathers who tried to defend their homes were cut down without mercy,” she said.
The LP leader lamented the unrelenting violence, pointing to the torching of homes, ambushes on security personnel, and repeated assaults on displaced persons as grim evidence of the state’s failure to protect its citizens.
“Every conscience should be shaken by the carnage in Benue.
It’s a national embarrassment, not just a regional one. The victims’ vulnerability and the attackers’ audacity expose a concerning lack of accountability and leadership,” Usman said.
The party demanded a coordinated humanitarian response that goes beyond military action and includes food supplies, shelter, medical aid, and trauma support for survivors.
Usman stressed that silence and apathy simply give violent actors more confidence, and he asked Nigerians to demand actual action instead of just “routine condemnations.”
As a mother, I share with the sorrow of the bereaved families.
“Your cries are heard, widowed women, orphaned children, and destroyed communities. Your suffering is felt across the country, and your call for justice cannot be disregarded,” she continued.
She reiterated the Labour Party’s dedication to promoting laws that put everyone’s safety and dignity first, especially those living in rural and conflict-affected areas.
Usman bemoaned, “Nigeria cannot continue like this.”
