Former Vice President and ADC chieftain Atiku Abubakar has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately implement the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government financial autonomy, warning that further delays violate the Constitution. The 2024 judgment declared the management of local government funds by state governments and the use of caretaker committees unconstitutional. While President Tinubu recently urged governors to comply and suggested he might issue an Executive Order to ensure direct funding, Atiku dismissed this as unnecessary political maneuvering. He argued that the President should simply direct the Attorney-General to enforce the ruling, claiming that the delay is a strategy to pressure opposition governors into joining the APC. Atiku emphasized that Supreme Court decisions are mandatory and that failing to act undermines grassroots development and the oath of office, stating that history will judge the administration for prioritizing political control over constitutional duty.
