The club leadership has determined that Carrick is the guy they want to speak with first, but they haven’t fully ruled out the idea of someone else taking over for the upcoming season and have contacted other potential candidates.
The former Manchester United midfielder has been the front-runner for the position for a while now. His bosses have been impressed by his popularity with the playing squad, his ability to handle the media, his innate knowledge of the history and size of the football club, and—most importantly—the results he has achieved on the field; in his 15 games in charge, he has won 10 and drawn 3. He has also guaranteed Champions League football for the upcoming season, potentially increasing revenue by £100 million.

Given that Carrick has exceeded all expectations, it has always been difficult to understand how United could offer the position to someone else.
