The Super Eagles of Nigeria, three-time Africa champions, now face a difficult task: the CAF and Intercontinental playoffs after failing to automatically qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup from Group C of the qualification campaign. The Super Eagles qualified for the single-knockout competition, which will take place in Morocco from November 13–16, by finishing among the top four runners-up on the continent. Nigeria finished second in Group C, behind South Africa, who received the only group ticket. On Thursday, November 13, Nigeria, the top-ranked team in the quartet, will play Gabon, the lowest-ranked team, in the first semi-final of the CAF playoffs. The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will face Congo DR in the second semi-final. The victors of the two semifinal games will compete in the playoff’s critical final on November 16. The winner will select Africa’s only spot in the intercontinental playoffs, which will take place in Mexico, one of the World Cup’s host nations, in March 2026.
