After the Los Angeles Lakers were swept out of the NBA playoffs by Oklahoma City on Monday in what may be his last game, LeBron James stated he will take some time to think about his future.
With 24 points and 12 rebounds, James, 41, put on his usual defiant display, but it was insufficient to keep the Lakers from losing 115-110 as the Thunder swept the Western Conference semi-finals series 4-0.
With doubt surrounding his future, the four-time NBA champion will enter the offseason as a free agent once his contract with the Lakers expires.
According to some rumors, James is prepared to sign a contract extension with the Lakers for what would be his 24th NBA season. However, other publications speculate that he may decide to retire from the game or contemplate moving elsewhere.
When asked about his plans after a defeat in Los Angeles in front of a galaxy of courtside Hollywood stars, including Eddie Murphy, Sean Penn, and Leonardo DiCaprio, James didn’t reveal much on Monday.
James remarked, “I don’t know what the future holds for me.”
“Obviously, I have a lot of time tonight as of right now. When the time comes, you guys will undoubtedly know what I decide to do. I’ll go back and reset with my family, talk to them, and spend some time with them.
James stated that his decision to continue might depend on how dedicated he was to the rigors of competing at the top level.
“I think it’s about the process—you know, if I can commit to still being in love with the process of showing up to the arena five and a half hours before a game to start preparing.”
Whatever James chooses, the seasoned star believes he has nothing more to prove after a career filled with numerous achievements and records that might never be surpassed.
James declared, “I have nothing to prove in this league.”
“I’ve seen everything and done everything. Therefore, I believe that simply striving to compete and win championships is a driving aspect.
The current NBA champions, Oklahoma City, are anticipating a Western Conference finals matchup with either the San Antonio Spurs or the Minnesota Timberwolves for a spot in the NBA finals as James muses over his future.
In their best-of-seven semifinal series, the Spurs and Timberwolves are tied at 2-2.
After completing an outstanding sweep of the Lakers and having already swept Phoenix in the first round, the Thunder will be optimistic about their chances of moving on.
With 35 points, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the top scorer for the Thunder.
Mitchell ignites the Cavaliers
Donovan Mitchell scored a record-tying number of points in the second half as the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Detroit Pistons 112-103 in the Eastern Conference semifinals to even the series.
Mitchell finished with 43 points, five rebounds, and two assists after scoring 39 points in the second half.
In front of a full Rocket Arena in Cleveland, James Harden scored 24 points to help the Cavaliers even the best-of-seven series at 2-2.
Mitchell had scored 30 points or more in three straight games, which has helped Cleveland overcome a 0-2 deficit to even the series.
The NBA record for most points in a single half of a postseason game, held by Eric Floyd of Golden State in 1987, was tied by Mitchell’s 39-point performance in the second half.
Mitchell claimed that following a poor first-half performance, he had apologized to his teammates at halftime.
In the first half, I failed to establish the offensive tone that I was attempting to. When halftime rolled along, I told my teammates, “It’s on me.” In the second half, I made an effort to make a statement,” Mitchell remarked.
Detroit battled to a 56-52 edge at the half after appearing prepared to take a 3-1 lead in the early going.
However, seven-time NBA All-Star Mitchell took over with a brilliant third-quarter performance, scoring 21 points as Cleveland went on an incredible 25-0 run to shift the tide of the game and take a decisive 75-58 lead.
Game five of the series will take place in Detroit on Wednesday.
