The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has conveyed its hopes for a quick recovery for Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi.
Taiwo Awoniyi had emergency surgery earlier in the week to treat an abdominal injury he sustained during a Premier League game involving his team, Nottingham Forest, and Leicester City, who are facing relegation.
During the final moments of the May 11 match, which concluded with a score of 2–2, the 27-year-old forward was part of a noteworthy occurrence.
In minute 88 of the match, Awoniyi made a desperate effort to link up with a cross sent in by his fellow player Anthony Elanga. During this, he crashed into the goalpost with great force, which led to Nottingham Forest’s medical staff rushing to assist him.
He completed the game successfully, but it wasn’t until the following day that he fully comprehended the seriousness of his injury. After additional medical assessment, it was concluded that immediate surgery was required.
Nottingham Forest released an official statement affirming that Awoniyi had successfully undergone surgery for his abdominal injury and expressing their support for him.
The club’s statement reads, “The club can confirm that Taiwo Awoniyi has had surgery after sustaining an abdominal injury during Sunday’s match against Leicester City. Everyone at Nottingham Forest extends their best wishes to Taiwo. The club will offer additional updates when suitable.
Following this regrettable turn of events, the NFF used their official X account on Tuesday, May 13, to show their support for the player.
The football organization stated: “Get ready, Tee, don’t forget you’re tougher than you believe.”
Further news from Nottingham Forest suggested that Awoniyi is progressing well in his recovery after the emergency surgery.
The club underscored the seriousness of his injury, stressing the inherent dangers linked to professional sports and the utmost importance of a player’s health and safety.
“The severity of his injury powerfully reminds us of the game’s physical dangers and the need to prioritize a player’s health and well-being,” the statement clarified.
The club seized the chance to counter rumors of an alleged clash between owner Evangelos Marinakis and manager Nuno Espirito Santo after the match, as well as to deal with issues related to Awoniyi’s health.
