Nigeria calls for moderation and denounces the Israeli airstrike in Qatar.

The Federal Government of Nigeria is deeply concerned about reports that earlier this week, senior Hamas leadership figures were the target of an Israeli airstrike in Doha, Qatar.

Kimiebi Ebienfa, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, warned that the attack could further destabilize the Middle East in a statement released Wednesday. The statement emphasized the importance of upholding international law and respecting national sovereignty.

“The future of diplomatic efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and regional stability are profoundly challenged by this incident,” the statement said.

The government urged all parties to refrain from further escalation and praised Qatar’s longstanding role as a mediator in peace talks.

“We demand the utmost caution and a fresh dedication to amicable communication. The statement went on to say that violence only serves to increase mistrust and prolong suffering.

Nigeria also expressed its sympathies to the attack victims and reaffirmed its support for global efforts to advance de-escalation and long-term peace.

In order to promote stability and protect the rule of law in the area, the government promised to keep collaborating with the UN and other multilateral organizations.

Since Hamas’ surprise attack on southern Israel in October 2023, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people and the capture of over 200 hostages, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has remained tense.

Since then, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has caused extensive damage and exacerbated the humanitarian crisis.
