Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, stated that U.S. President Donald Trump has been given incorrect information regarding the crisis in Nigeria.
The statement follows Trump’s threat to send the U.S. military to Nigeria due to what he called the Nigerian government’s failure to stop the alleged targeted killing of Christians by militants.
In response on Piers Morgan’s show, Tuggar said, “We respect the U.S. and President Trump. It is unfortunate that President Trump was misinformed by those who spread falsehoods, leading to his statement.”
He urged continued talks to provide better information and clarity. Tuggar emphasized that Nigeria is not a place for a religious war (“jihad or a crusade”) and that Nigerians have lived peacefully for a long time, stressing the complexity of the country.
The minister disagreed with figures from the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety), which claimed more than 50,000 Christians have been killed since 2009 and 18,000 churches destroyed.
Tuggar presented his own figures for the last five years, saying 177 Christians have been killed, 98 injured, and seven abducted, with 102 churches attacked in that period.
