In Ekiti State, the National Orientation Agency has stepped up its efforts to fight environmental contamination, human rights abuses, and female genital mutilation (FGM).
Speaking at a sensitization event in Ado Ekiti on Monday, Mrs. Kemi Akomolafe, the NOA Director in Ekiti, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to ending FGM entirely and raising public knowledge of human rights and personal cleanliness.
“NOA is dedicated to completely eliminating female genital mutilation and cutting, particularly among Ekiti State’s women and children. Citizens must accept responsibility for their deeds and participate in the advancement of the state, said Akomolafe.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and the Ekiti State Primary Healthcare Development Agency were among the important agencies that attended the event, which took place in the state capital.
In order to increase awareness, Akomolafe highlighted the organization’s grassroots mobilization strategy via NOA’s community orientation officers. In order to live a healthy lifestyle, she recommended the people to maintain environmental and personal hygiene.
“FGM is an injurious practice that violates human rights and should not be allowed due to the serious consequences that follow the act,” she said.
“We must also refrain from all forms of human rights abuse and maintain a clean environment for the overall well-being of our communities.”
In her presentation, Dr. Olajumoke Oguntoye, the State Health Educator from the Ekiti State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, cautioned against chemical food preservation, advocating instead for natural methods to ensure food safety.
NAFDAC State Coordinator, Mrs. Stella Dosunmu, reassured participants of ongoing surveillance on food and drug outlets, stating, “Our agency is monitoring and regulating food and drug outlets in the state to rid Ekiti of substandard, fake, and harmful products.”
From the NHRC, Principal Investigation Officer Theophilus Gbadeyan highlighted the importance of respecting human rights, with special emphasis on freedom of association.
Commending the initiative, the State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Emmanuel Aribasoye, urged attendees to carry the message to rural communities to ensure widespread impact.
