The selection of Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, for an ambassadorial position has caused disagreement and fragmentation among the former president’s kinsmen in the Ijaw community.
DAILY POST recalls that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented a list of 32 ambassadorial candidates on Saturday, with Omokri included among the chosen individuals.
Responding to this, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), questioned the honesty of some of those nominated, alleging that several were facing ongoing fraud investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Okaba, specifically mentioning Omokri, asserted that the nomination appeared to be compensation for his public backing of President Tinubu.
He argued that, given Nigeria’s serious security issues, the country needs honorable men and women to serve as its representatives.
He condemned the practice he termed the re-use of established political figures for critical roles without considering the potential impact such appointments have on Nigeria’s international reputation.
Okaba stated, “Some of these nominees are involved in many cases with the EFCC. Their credibility is doubtful. I was surprised to see the former INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, included on the list.”
However, Joseph Ambakaderimo, a prominent Ijaw leader and convener of the South-South Reawakening Group (SSRG), held a contrary view to Prof. Okaba, suggesting that Omokri’s nomination as a non-career ambassador was appropriate.
Ambakaderimo remarked, “I find nothing wrong with nominating the young man. He has experience as a presidential aide and commands a large following. He is qualified and capable of handling the position effectively.”
Addressing concerns about Omokri’s earlier criticisms of President Tinubu, particularly regarding alleged issues with drugs and certificates, Ambakaderimo pointed out that previous presidents have also been targets of public scrutiny.
He concluded, “President Tinubu demonstrates great generosity. Reno Omokri will perform very well as an ambassador because he understands politics. He has the support base. The President made an appropriate choice.”
