On December 12, Governor Otti authorizes the state burial of legendary boxer Obisia Nwankpa.

Olympian and former national boxing coach Obisia Nwankpa will receive a state burial on December 12, 2025, according to Abia State Governor Alex Otti. Meanwhile, Otti has criticized the federal government for failing to honor a man who spent more than 40 years creating Nigeria’s boxing legacy and winning international awards for the nation.”If the federal government can reject their own, I will not reject mine,” the governor said, according to Abia State Director of Sports Obioma George. Speaking to reporters in Calabar, the site of the week-long 2nd National Council on Sports conference, George bemoaned the way the late boxing legend was treated. He reaffirmed that Governor Otti was extremely troubled by the disregard for Nwakpa, a former Commonwealth boxing champion who made significant contributions to the growth of the sport in Nigeria. George bemoaned that the country had once again neglected to honor one of its sporting giants, calling the situation “pathetic.” He affirmed that in addition to authorizing a state funeral, Governor Otti has also approved monies for the burial and a package of financial assistance for the family.
