Onanuga’s remarks were delivered during a Monday interview on Arise Television. He described Nigeria’s reaction to the previous week’s attempted coup in Benin as prompt, systematic, and executed solely upon the invitation of the Beninese government. He indicated that the recent events illustrate the government’s dedication to preserving democracy both domestically and in neighboring countries. He also mentioned that the rescue of the Papiri children demonstrates the capability of the Nigerian armed forces, including the air force and ground troops, to defend the nation. Onanuga claimed that President Patrice Talon personally requested Nigeria’s aid at the start of the coup attempt. He specified that President Talon’s administration sent two immediate requests: first, for Nigeria to deploy fighter jets to counter the plotters, followed by a second request for ground forces. The presidential aide added that this intervention aligns with ECOWAS regulations and President Tinubu’s consistent dedication to protecting democratic governance throughout the West African sub-region.
