Edo North Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, strongly criticized the immediate past state governor, Godwin Obaseki, asserting that he failed the people of the state terribly.
Oshiomhole made the statement on Sunday in Benin while responding to claims by the state People’s Democratic Party (PDP) that Governor Monday Okpebholo’s first year in office was unproductive. He argued that Okpebholo inherited a state that was abandoned, noting that Obaseki had performed numerous ground-breaking ceremonies for projects that produced minimal tangible results. The lawmaker also dismissed the PDP as a “dead party” that did not deliver meaningful results when it was in power. Oshiomhole told journalists they should not rely on quotes from the “dead party,” urging them instead to focus on “verifiable facts from events they cover across the state rather than statements that lack credibility.”
The former governor praised Okpebholo’s impact in his first year, highlighting the ongoing construction of a flyover at Ramat Park, which is intended to reduce traffic congestion in a major state area. He stressed that the economic benefits of saving time and fuel cannot be underestimated. He added that multiple road projects currently underway across Edo State prove the administration’s dedication to development, dismissing accusations that the projects are mere political stunts. Regarding education, the former Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President accused the previous administration of neglecting the sector, leaving many schools with inadequate staff and damaged facilities. He stated that Governor Okpebholo has begun rehabilitating these schools, restoring functional learning environments, and recruiting 5,000 teachers. He also commended the increase in funding for tertiary institutions, noting that the current administration has restored or expanded subventions for Ambrose Alli University (AAU) and Edo University, Iyamho. Oshiomhole specifically commended Okpebholo “for raising AAU’s monthly subvention from N41m to N500m, helping resolve long-standing academic disruptions.” He added that “Edo University, Iyamho, now receives N250m monthly, a strategic investment in higher education.”
