After being nominated by IOC President Kirsty Coventry, seven-time Olympian Olufunke Oshonaike became the first Nigerian appointed to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission. One of the most accomplished table tennis players in Africa, Oshonaike, was one of five new members nominated to guarantee the Commission is fully constituted prior to the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina.The IOC announced the selections of Soraya Aghaei Haji Agha (badminton, Iran), Husein Alireza (rowing, Saudi Arabia), Cheick Sallah Cissé (taekwondo, Côte d’Ivoire), Olufunke Oshonaike (table tennis, Nigeria), and Mariana Pajón (cycling, Colombia) in a statement issued on Thursday, December 4. Emma Terho, the IOC AC Chair, was consulted during the appointment process.
