Mr. Peter Obi, a leading presidential candidate, responded to the request made by Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s wife during her birthday celebration. Recently, Senator Oluremi Tinubu asked anyone who wanted to honor her with presents or newspaper ads to instead focus their efforts on the National Library’s completion in Abuja.
Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, objected to this request, pointing out that Nigeria can finish its National Library without waiting for birthday presents.
Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, bemoaned the fact that millions of dollars are being squandered on vacations, planes, and yachts, while a country like Nigeria will now have to wait for birthday gifts from Remi Tinubu’s well-wishers before finishing a national project.
Obi criticized the president’s wife for prioritizing vanity over education despite knowing that education is crucial in a post titled “We Are Finished” on X. Obi called the situation “tragic and shocking.” Obi also wished the First Lady more years on earth.
“We’re done! I wish Her Excellency Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu a very happy birthday, as do millions of Nigerians.
He wrote, “May God Almighty, who has supported her throughout the years, grant her many more years of good health, prosperity, and happiness.” Irony struck me, though, when I read her request that well-wishers contribute to the completion of the National Library in Abuja rather than purchasing cakes or newspaper ads. It appears to be selfless and noble. However, underneath it is a critique of our country.
“Recall that when I was governor of Anambra State, I also advocated for funds intended for advertisements to be directed toward worthwhile projects, such as classroom blocks and computers for schools. Such actions were intended to supplement, not to take the place of, the government’s responsibility. The state was still in charge of supplying those necessities.
