The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, asserted that a number of Nigerian politicians are intentionally hindering the nation’s progress. Speaking in Lagos at the fifteenth anniversary celebration of Enough is Enough, or EiE, Nigeria, Sanusi stated that some members of the political class view holding public office as an endeavor for personal or family gain rather than a duty to serve the populace. He identified this particular attitude as a significant underlying reason why Nigeria is failing to advance. According to him, leaders frequently pass up genuine opportunities for national improvement because their primary focus is on advancing their self-interests. He remarked, “We have done enough damage, and maybe we need to stop,” adding that these are not merely missed opportunities, but are sometimes opportunities that are deliberately overlooked.
Sanusi further commented that Nigeria’s leaders prioritize themselves, their families, and their close associates. He strongly emphasized that public office must revolve around the citizens. The Emir urged the youth of Nigeria to reject the broken system they have inherited. He called on them to unite and work toward creating a nation that embodies their aspirations, instead of accepting the failures of previous leaders. He characterized the present system as one founded on tribal friction, religious strain, and the pursuit of individual enrichment. He declared, “The nation belongs to us. It does not belong to the government or politicians,” emphasizing that in whatever role people find themselves, they hold a small portion of Nigeria and have a responsibility to contribute their part. Sanusi called for young people from all different backgrounds to unify and clearly define the type of country they desire, one that is distinctly separate from the Nigeria shaped by years of poor governance. He concluded that it must be a Nigeria that rises above ethnic conflicts, religious hostilities, and the seeking of rent, a country that finally achieves its potential among the community of nations.
