After receiving the All Progressives Congress (APC) statement of interest and nomination papers on Wednesday, former Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar formally entered the race for governor of Bauchi State.
After finalizing the purchase of the N50 million forms, Tuggar spoke to reporters about his prospective administration’s top concerns, emphasizing economic regeneration through agriculture and insecurity.
He pointed out that improving livelihoods in Bauchi would need addressing security issues and making greater use of the state’s agricultural resources.
The challenge of insecurity and the need to properly utilise our farmland will be top priorities. Bauchi has vast land resources, and these must be structured in a way that supports subsistence farmers and pastoralists while lifting people out of poverty,” he said.
Tuggar emphasised that fair access to land must be ensured to prevent economic imbalance, warning against a system where resources are concentrated in the hands of a few at the expense of the majority.
On the party’s primary election method, the aspirant said he would accept either direct primaries or consensus arrangements, provided the process is transparent and credible.
“As long as it ensures fairness, I am at ease with whatever course of action the party chooses. Producing candidates with integrity and sincere support from the public is what matters most, he said.
On March 30, 2026, Tuggar resigned from his position as minister in accordance with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s order for political appointees running for office to quit.
After his departure, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who had previously held the position of Minister of State in the same ministry, was chosen to head the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
