Concerns about the increasing bureaucracy and political roadblocks impeding humanitarian aid worldwide have been voiced by Pope Leo XIV.
Speaking on Monday, June 22, 2026, at the World Food Programme’s (WFP) headquarters in Rome, Italy, the pope claimed that administrative bottlenecks and misdirected global objectives are preventing millions of people experiencing hunger and hardship from receiving timely assistance.
“People are not as easily fed as conflicts.” The Pope stated, “This shows a concerning imbalance in our political and moral priorities.”
On the one hand, bureaucratic processes are burdening humanitarian efforts more and more, potentially delaying aid.
However, he added, “access to necessities, such as food, is too frequently influenced by economic or strategic considerations.”
“Those who do not produce measurable value therefore run the risk of becoming invisible,” he continued.
He urged nations and international organisations to lower obstacles to assistance delivery and improve collaboration in addressing global hunger, poverty, and humanitarian disasters.
