The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, or NDLEA, Amendment Bill, 2025, which was just approved by the National Assembly, has not received President Bola Tinubu’s approval.
In contrast to the existing legal system, the measure suggests giving the NDLEA the authority to keep a share of the money obtained from drug-related offenses.
The Speaker, Representative Tajudeen Abbas, read this to the House of Representatives during Thursday’s session.
Citing Section 58, Subsection 4 of the 1999 Constitution, President Tinubu claimed that the bill would violate the aforementioned provisions if it were signed.
According to current law, all criminal proceeds must be paid into the Confiscated and Forfeited Properties Account, Tinubu explained.
He clarified that the President alone, with the consent of the National Assembly and the Federal Executive Council, may make any payments to the appropriate authorities engaged in recovery.
