Former presidential aide and social commentator Reno Omokri has characterized Nigeria’s loss of its position as Africa’s largest petrol importer as a positive sign of economic transformation spurred by increasing local production and exports. While touring the Dangote Refinery on Friday, Omokri noted that South Africa has now surpassed Nigeria as the top petrol importer, while Nigeria has become the largest exporter of refined petroleum products in West Africa, marking a “360 degree turnaround.” Omokri stressed that a strong Naira is dependent on production and export, not import reliance, arguing that the recent shift in fuel trade dynamics indicates a move toward refining self-sufficiency. He emphasized that genuine prosperity is defined by the purchasing power of money tied to productivity, stating that it is better for citizens to earn a smaller, value-backed sum capable of buying goods and property, than a high nominal wage that is not supported by real production. Omokri concluded by urging the government, citizens, and labor unions to prioritize building an economy anchored on industrial capacity, productivity, and export growth over simply raising wages without underlying production.
