Nigerian music star and activist Charles Oputa, famously known as Charly Boy, has publicly criticized popular commentator Reno Omokri for what he perceives as a change in stance regarding the alleged genocide against Christians in Nigeria.
The controversy surrounds claims by some foreign entities that thousands of Christians have been killed by Islamic extremists, allegations that have been strongly denied by the Presidency and Nigerian officials. Omokri recently echoed this denial, arguing that the country’s security crisis impacts all religions. However, an earlier tweet where Omokri explicitly criticized the late President Buhari’s administration for permitting “genocide against Christians” recently resurfaced.
In a Facebook post, Charly Boy slammed Omokri for what he termed “double standards,” suggesting that Omokri is leveraging the suffering of Nigerians purely to gain a political appointment from President Bola Tinubu’s government. The activist accused Omokri of hypocrisy and opportunism, stating in Pidgin English: “You dey twist stories of Christian killings, one minute you cry ‘genocide,’ next minute you say ‘no genocide’ all because your stomach don move to another camp.” Charly Boy concluded that Omokri proves that “education no equal integrity” and that his hypocrisy “don reach everybody nose.”
