Nigerian artist Shallipopi has pledged to avoid future editions of The Headies, the leading Afrobeats award, following an embarrassing incident at its 17th edition in Lagos on Sunday.
Shallipopi, who lost the fiercely contested Next Rated category to his frequent collaborator Odumodublvck, believed he had received a consolation when his track “Cast” was declared the Best Rap Single of the Year.
However, when Shallipopi reached the stage to accept his award, the presenter only offered him a handshake, as it was reported that the organizers had run out of award plaques during the event.
On Monday, Shallipopi discussed the embarrassing incident on his X page and promised to boycott the award ceremony from now on.
He asserted that he didn’t even desire the award for Best Rap Single, as he doesn’t see himself as a rapper. He encouraged the organisers to award it to the “real rappers” in that category.
The music star penned, “The next one if una see me make I bend.
“I no go fit lie for una sef, I no want dat award. List the authentic rappers in the category. Me, Shallipopi, am not a rapper.
