Claims that the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) ordered Muslims to pray for Josh Amupitan, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to be removed have been refuted.
In a statement released by its Secretary-General, Nafiu Baba Ahmad, the council denounced as false and deceptive allegations that claimed elections would not take place until Amupitan was removed from his position as INEC chair.
Stressing that it never issued any direction or declaration of that like, the council strongly distanced itself from the allegations.
“The council never issued a decree or called for such prayers. According to the statement, “these fabrications are meant to mislead the public, create needless tension, and drag the council into partisan political matters.”
It reaffirmed that the SCSN is still a respectable religious organization dedicated to advancing equity, justice, moral principles, and harmonious cohabitation.
The council further stated that it steers clear of political manipulation that would jeopardize national stability and functions above partisan interests.
Nonetheless, the council reiterated its previous stance that the INEC chairman need to step down or be dismissed.
It claimed that this position stems from worries over purported prejudice against Islam and Muslims, as evidenced by a widely shared legal brief ascribed to him.
The council claims that such feelings are incompatible with the impartiality, honesty, and patriotism required of someone holding a delicate national position.
The SCSN advised the public, particularly the Muslim Ummah and the media, to depend solely on its official messages and to ignore false stories.
