According to Alan Shearer, a former Newcastle United hero, Arsenal is getting close to accomplishing something the team has never done before: winning a double.
Arsenal is poised to win the Premier League and the Champions League in one season.
With a 2-1 aggregate victory over Atletico Madrid, the Gunners maintained a five-point lead at the top of the EPL standings and guaranteed their place in this season’s championship final.
Shearer notably praised the “exceptional” Viktor Gyokeres during a Prime Video conversation.
After a 1-1 draw in Madrid last week, the semi-final matchup was evenly matched, with nothing separating the clubs at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.
The game-changing goal that sent Arsenal to Budapest was scored by Bukayo Saka, who was the first to react to a save by Jan Oblak.
Shearer was pleased by Arsenal’s tenacity against Diego Simeone’s Atletico, even if he recognized that they were not playing at their best on a stressful evening in North London.
The play of striker Gyokeres, who caused serious problems for the Atletico center-backs and helped Arsenal score the game-winning goal, particularly impressed Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer.
Shearer was nevertheless impressed with the Sweden international even though Gyokeres, who moved to Arsenal for £64 million last summer, lost a great chance to win the match.
