Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated during the second reading of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill that Nigerian elections have significantly improved since the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) left the presidency in 2023.
Akpabio cited the last election as an example of this improvement, referencing the extensive legal battle that reached the Supreme Court over the interpretation of winning the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
He also claimed that, during the 2023 elections, unnamed individuals from Anambra State traveled abroad to fabricate documents which they later presented in court, noting that the papers were submitted in an un-foldable state.
Following his comments, the Senate President announced the passage of the bill, titled: “A bill for an Act to repeal the Electoral Number 13 of 2022 and enact the Electoral Act 2025 to regulate the conduct of Federal, States and Area Councils in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, elections and for related matters 2025 second reading taken.”
