According to Daily Trust, the importation of solar panels into Nigeria has decreased by 89 percent in Q1 2025.
The solar panels, referred to as ‘Photovoltaic cells assembled in modules or made up into panels,’ experienced an import value of N125.294bn in the Q1 2025, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Foreign Trade Statistics. This represents a decrease from the N237.309bn imported in the last quarter of 2024.
It would be recalled that Abba Aliyu, the Managing Director/CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), recently mentioned that Nigeria’s current manufacturing capacity for PV panels is 600 megawatts. He noted that the country’s previous total manufacturing capacity was only 110 megawatts and highlighted that a fully operational LPV with a 100-megawatt capacity in Lagos now exists.
