Nigerians who intend to come to the US for the 2026 World Cup may be impacted by President Donald Trump’s new visa restrictions. Trump signed a proclamation on Tuesday that prohibits citizens of high-risk nations from entering the country because of “demonstrated, persistent, and severe deficiencies in screening, vetting, and information-sharing” that endanger public safety and national security. Nigeria is one of the fifteen other nations that are now under partial restrictions. This implies that Nigerians holding B-1, B-2, B-1/B-2, F, M, and J visas, as well as non-immigrant visas, are suspended. The validity of any additional non-immigrant visas already granted to Nigerians has also been advised to be shortened by American Embassy officials.The fact that some Nigerians overstay their visas when they travel to the US is another factor in the US government’s decision. This comes amid rumors that if the Super Eagles’ appeal to FIFA about the eligibility of some DR Congo players is granted, they would still be able to participate in the World Cup the following year.
