Nigeria’s loss to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the CAF playoff final on Sunday night means they won’t be attending the 2026 World Cup. Frank Onyeka’s shot was deflected in, giving the Super Eagles an early lead in the first half. The game ended 1-1 after 120 minutes and was decided on penalties, however the Leopards were tied after Mechak Elia took advantage of a defensive blunder to finish past Stanley Nwabali. Moses Simon, Semi Ajayi, and Calvin Bassey all missed their kicks. DR Congo secured a spot in the intercontinental playoffs to represent Africa. In order to determine the final two teams for the World Cup the following year, they will now compete in a six-team intercontinental qualification that will take place from March 23 to 31 in 2026.
