The Delta State Council’s Nigerian Labour Congress, or NLC, has declared that it opposes the state’s new dress code for civil servants. According to the NLC, the government disregarded workers’ representatives and implemented a new policy that would tax workers’ paychecks.
Speaking to employees in pidgin English on Friday, the NLC, led by Comrade Goodluck Oforbrukueta, advised them to avoid going to the Labour House if they were disciplined by government officials for the new dress code for civil servants.
“We nor gree because the money we earn nor reach chop,” he said. We are unable to cover our children’s tuition. We are unable to pay our rent. We cannot transport ourselves to work, and we must all wear suits, to put it mildly.
Oforbrukueta pledged that NLC would do everything in its power to protect and defend the worker.
They never even consider how to make our earnings better, whether we are able to take care of our health, or whether we are able to chop chop. They say we should wear that or a suit. We don’t have the funds to wear those.
Why don’t you go talk to workers’ representatives if you want to create new policies? They don’t even talk to any of us about am. Dem simply sit down and issue a circular for their office. They believe that since they receive corner markings, all employees also receive them.
As a result, many employees do not see chairs or tables. In their office, neither of them sees Biro take write. Some people don’t even receive paper. No stationery. You say, “Let’s go buy a suit.” Where is the money? How much do you pay the employees?
