Chidi Odinkalu, the former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, criticized former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami for suggesting the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is being politically motivated in its actions against him. In a post on X on Sunday, Odinkalu characterized Malami as a “grubby, vexatiously political Attorney-General” during his time in office. He suggested that if Malami now perceives the EFCC as politicized, it is because they are simply following the example he set for them. Odinkalu wrote that someone should advise Abubakar Malami to refrain from commenting, as he himself was a highly political Attorney-General, adding that if Malami is now complaining about the EFCC’s political nature, they should tell him that they are only replicating his own behavior and have no reason to deny it. Odinkalu’s remarks followed Malami’s accusation that the EFCC withdrew his bail because he participated in a political gathering in Kebbi State. The EFCC, however, countered that Malami failed to satisfy the five conditions linked to his provisional bail and dismissed his claims as “untenable.” The commission reiterated that it operates without political bias and urged Malami to concentrate on meeting his bail obligations rather than making what it described as “bogus claims.” Malami is currently being investigated for alleged abuse of office, money laundering, and terrorism financing, though he maintains that he has not violated any bail conditions.
