For calling the horrific deaths in Benue State a “reprisal attack,” President Bola Tinubu has drawn harsh criticism.
The President referred to the horrible tragedy as “retaliatory attacks” while denouncing the murder of more than 200 villagers in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area, according to the DAILY POST.
Tinubu claimed to have “renewed his order in the wake of the latest round of reprisal attacks that led to the death of many people” in a statement released by his media assistant, Bayo Onanuga.
However, the statement failed to clarify why the alleged unprovoked attacks were referred to as retaliation, which caused state residents to respond.
Principal Special Assistant to the governor of Benue State on Youth and Media Mobilization, Atu Terver, in a post on his official Facebook page, said the “press statement by the President is just making me shed tears”.
He added, “How can u call genocide a reprisal attack?”
Also, an activist, Ukan Kurugh, said, “Bayo Onanuga speaking on behalf of the President on his X account called this a reprisal attack?
“Yes, no one is coming to get us, but we still need to save ourselves.”
There is more to what the President said, according to Aguredam Keghter Moses, Deputy Country Director, African Youth Union Commission, Nigeria.
“The President’s press release ought to convey a “CLEAR MESSAGE” already,” he commented on his Facebook page.
