Tony Okocha, the factional chairman of the All Progressives Congress, or APC, in Rivers State, has been accused by the South-South Youths Initiative of refusing to back peace attempts in the state because he personally benefits from the ongoing political conflict.
Okocha was also chastised by the youth group for what it called provocative remarks.
In recent media appearances, Okocha stated that Siminalayi Fubara, the suspended governor of Rivers State, could not join the APC through the back door and that his “sin” would not be pardoned if he did.
Speaking to newsmen on Sunday, the National President of the South-South Youths Initiative, Imeabe Saviour Oscar, claimed that Okocha became the state representative of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, and the factional APC State chairman as a result of the political instability.
Oscar added that Okocha fears losing his current positions if peace is restored in the state.
Oscar, while describing Okocha’s prioritization of personal gain over the welfare of Rivers people as shameful, called for his immediate resignation from all positions.
He also demanded a thorough investigation into Okocha’s role and activities within the NDDC board.
Oscar declared, “It is unacceptable that he has refused to support peace initiatives in Rivers State because he stands to gain personally from the state’s ongoing political crisis.”
In order to make Rivers State intolerable for the Executive Governor or suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, to continue heating up the political climate, Mr. Tony Okocha became the state representative of the NDDC in Rivers State due to the state’s political crisis. He is also the APC’s faction in Rivers State.
Mr. Tony Okocha is concerned that if the peace movement succeeds, he would lose his current job because his political annoyance might not be as popular as it once was.
“It is shameful that Mr. Tony Okocha has put his own interests ahead of the well-being of Rivers State residents; his actions impede efforts to resolve the crisis and cause instability and suffering for the innocent citizens,” he continued.
