Wayne Rooney, a legend of Manchester United, has stated that he hopes Scott McTominay returns to the team and expressed shock that the Red Devils let him go in the first place.
The 29-year-old midfielder made 255 appearances for Manchester United between 2017 and 2024 after growing through the team’s development system.
He was decided to be transferred two years ago, and Napoli paid little more than £25 million to have him play in Serie A.
The Italian team made a wise choice in making this trade, as McTominay excelled and contributed to winning the Serie A championship in his rookie campaign.
As a goal-scoring midfielder for both his club and the national team, he has continued to succeed. This summer, he was instrumental in helping Scotland win their first World Cup in 28 years.
Rooney would be overjoyed to see McTominay return to Old Trafford with his newfound effect after he transformed from a supporting player to a top performance.
“I was shocked that Manchester United let him go when they did, as he clearly puts in a tremendous amount of effort,” he stated on The Wayne Rooney Show.
He made a big impact and was one of those players you wanted on the field every week at the time of his departure because it seemed like others weren’t giving it their all.
He was scoring important goals while playing in a more advanced position.
“I thought, ‘Wow, what is going here?’ when Manchester United made the decision to sell him. However, I would really like to see him return to Manchester United.
In addition to signing Ederson from Atalanta this summer, Manchester United intends to acquire another midfield player.
While McTominay has not received much attention for a return, players like Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace, Alex Scott of Bournemouth, and Mateus Fernandes of West Ham have been suggested as possible targets.
Rather, he will be focused on Scotland’s World Cup trip, which starts early on Sunday morning UK time against Haiti. McTominay is expected to be fine for the game despite missing training on Thursday due to a gastrointestinal problem.
