After Barcelona decided to send Marcus Rashford back to Manchester United, Chelsea is thinking about making a move for him.
After spending the previous season on loan at the Nou Camp, Rashford hoped to sign a long-term contract with Barcelona.
The 28-year-old, who is preparing for England’s World Cup campaign, had a big impact at Barcelona, scoring 14 goals in all competitions as Hansi Flick’s club advanced far into the Champions League and won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup.
Barcelona had the chance to sign Rashford for about £26 million when they set up the loan for the Manchester United youngster last summer.
Given that Rashford’s performances were regularly praised by Flick and Barcelona’s sports director Deco, it was expected that the Spanish champions would use this provision.
But this month, Rashford suffered a blow when Barcelona paid £70 million to sign his England colleague Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United.
Although it was announced earlier this week that Rashford would be returning to Old Trafford, reports suggested that Barcelona was still keen in keeping him even after Gordon arrived.
Despite Michael Carrick’s recent hiring as the permanent head coach, Rashford appears to have no future at the Theatre of Dreams after making over 400 appearances for his childhood team, Manchester United.
As a result, Rashford’s management have started looking into other possibilities, and earlier this month, Chelsea was connected to an unexpected transfer.
The Blues have not ruled out the prospect of pursuing Rashford, according to Chelsea analyst Si Phillips, and they may think about making a formal approach later in the summer.
However, it is said that Chelsea will only get in touch with Rashford if their attempts to sign other players fail, and even then, they would only be considering a loan deal.
As Xabi Alonso, a former midfielder for Real Madrid and Liverpool, gets ready to take over as manager, fresh players are expected to arrive in west London. Rashford has also been linked to Aston Villa, Tottenham, and Arsenal, Chelsea’s London rivals in the Premier League.
