David Raya, the goalkeeper for Arsenal, was called “the best player on the pitch” by Sporting CP head coach Rui Borges during the first leg of each teams’ UEFA Champions League quarterfinal match on Tuesday.
Borges maintained that David Raya, the goalkeeper for Arsenal, was the true game-changer despite Kai Havertz’s thrilling stoppage-time goal in Lisbon.
The Spanish goalie won UEFA’s official Player of the Match award after making a number of spectacular saves to deny Sporting.
“Yes, I would say David Raya was the best player on the pitch tonight because we had some really, really good chances to score, but he made some superb saves,” Borges said in an interview with Prime Video following the game.
Ironically, he continued, “On the other end, our keeper Rui Silva was not overly troubled, and it was a pretty equal game.”
