The Chairman of Yakurr Local Government Area in Cross River State, Yibala Igiri Inyang, has clarified that he has not established any panel to investigate the recent cult-related violence in Ugep town, where a woman and her daughter were injured by stray bullets.
Inyang made this statement to correct misleading media reports that suggested he had inaugurated an investigative committee. He emphasized that if such a panel were formed, it would have been officially announced with the names of its members disclosed.
The violence broke out on September 25, 2025, when members of the Bagga confraternity allegedly engaged in a violent clash, firing shots recklessly in public areas. Unfortunately, a woman and her daughter were struck by bullets during the incident, causing widespread anger in the community.
The council chairman explained that security agencies are already managing the situation. “I have reported the incident to the state security authorities. Both the DSS and the Police are currently conducting investigations,” he said.
He pointed out that his previous remarks were misquoted by the media. “I did not set up any panel to look into the incident. That responsibility lies with the security agencies,” he insisted.
Inyang, who has a background as a trained security officer, stressed the need for a thorough investigation and assured that further actions would follow once official reports are released.
Reacting to the incident, former presidential aide Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, whose community was affected, described the violence and killings as deeply troubling.
He noted that petitions had already been submitted to the Inspector General of Police, the DSS, and other relevant bodies, calling for urgent intervention.
Confirming ongoing developments, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer for the state, Igri Ewa, stated, “Petitions forwarded to Police leadership are documented and passed on for investigation. The results of such probes are always made public,” he assured.
