The Pentagon announced on Tuesday that it would reverse a 2018 decision and rename the US Indo-Pacific Command the US Pacific Command.
According to a statement from the Department of War, the command’s area of responsibility, which extends from the western region of India to the Pacific coast of America, would remain unchanged despite the rebranding.
Additionally, it stated that its “fundamental mission and its unwavering commitment to maintaining a free and open theatre alongside regional allies and partners” have not changed.
Without providing further information, the department stated that the name change “honours the command’s deep historical roots, fostering a sense of pride and collective spirit among all who serve in the Pacific.”
Following World War II, former President Harry Truman created the US Pacific Command.
Before changing its name to the US Indo-Pacific Command in 2018 in recognition of the Indian Ocean’s increasing significance in US strategic thinking, it operated under that name for more than 70 years.
The 2018 name change was also a part of Washington’s larger initiatives to resist China’s expanding sway over the Asia-Pacific region.
