Taiwo Awoniyi, a forward for the Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker, has been put into an induced coma after emergency surgery to address a serious abdominal injury.
Taiwo Awoniyi sustained an injury in the dying minutes of Forest’s 2-2 Premier League match against Leicester City on Sunday.
Awoniyi, in a frantic bid to net a late decisive goal, crashed into the goalpost. He was hurt in the incident; although he initially appeared to have sustained a minor injury, it later turned out to be much more severe.
Awoniyi, having received treatment for an injury sustained during the match, continued to play despite not being fit to do so; this was because Forest had already used all their substitutes. Ultimately, though, he had to get off because the pain grew too intense.
Forest first issued a statement on Tuesday, stating that the 27-year-old was “recovering well” following emergency surgery. However, new reports now depict a more sobering reality.
The Daily Mail reports that upon discovering the injury’s potential to be life-threatening, doctors initiated a rapid and intricate surgical procedure.
Awoniyi was put into an induced coma to assist his recovery. This medically managed state aimed to stabilize his condition after surgery by limiting movement, managing pain, and helping regulate his heart rate.
At present, there are no signs that his life is in danger, but the action highlights the seriousness of the trauma.
The injury has also ignited controversy within the club. Immediately after the final whistle, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was seen confronting head coach Nuno Espirito Santo on the pitch at City Ground, a scene that drew criticism from fans and pundits alike.
In a statement that used strong language, though, the club defended Marinakis’ actions, saying they were due to a profound worry about how the situation with Awoniyi was managed.
“His response demonstrated profound care, a sense of duty, and emotional commitment to one of our own,” the club stated. „Für Evangelos Marinakis ist dies nicht nur ein Fußballverein, sondern Familie… It became more and more challenging for him to remain on the sidelines when he saw our player clearly in discomfort and struggling with visible pain.
Awoniyi is currently under close observation in the hospital, with hopes for his complete recovery in the coming weeks. However, as Forest continues to strive for a historic Champions League spot, his absence will deal a serious blow to the team.
