Just two weeks after a fire destroyed scores of stores at Kano’s well-known Singer Market, another fire has reduced over 1,000 stores and many residential buildings to ashes, resulting in losses estimated at over N5 billion and seven people reported missing. The most recent fire, which raged from Saturday afternoon through Sunday, has raised concerns about the market’s ongoing fires because experts and traders think it has revealed long-standing structural, safety, and regulatory flaws that continue to make the market a disaster-prone area.
