In advance of the 2027 general elections, a branch of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State that supports Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike established a new state executive committee.
During a congress in Sokoto overseen by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, and PDP National Secretariat officials, the new executives were announced.
Abubakar Bawa-Kalgo, the delegation’s leader, said the exercise was transparent and carried out in accordance with the party’s constitution.
Before the newly elected officials were sworn in, he also dissolved the state caretaker committee and urged them to continue being responsible and dedicated to their duties.
Hayatu Tafida is the State Chairman of the new executive committee, which also includes Ahmad S. Fawa as Secretary, Bello Bashir as Treasurer, Abdulkadir Gidadawa as Youth Leader, Murtala Muhammad as Auditor, Hadiza Abubakar as Women Leader, and Buhari Sidi-Attahiru as Publicity Secretary.
Speaking at the function, PDP candidate for governor Abubakar Abdullahi congratulated the new officials and encouraged them to contribute to the party’s expansion in the state.
Additionally, Abdullahi challenged Tanimu Turaki’s faction members to cease portraying themselves as the party’s legitimate leadership, claiming that the Supreme Court had invalidated the convention that produced them.
He asked, “How can a group that was invited to hold a national convention in a state that was once ruled by one of its members still claim leadership of our party after the Supreme Court invalidated the convention?”
Speaking as well, PDP National Organising Secretary Umar Bature emphasised that the opposing faction lacked legal recognition while urging members to unite in order to improve the party’s prospects in Sokoto State.
“I urge those posing as PDP leaders in Sokoto to cease doing so. “You ought to close that office so you don’t pretend to be the official party leadership,” he stated.
Hayatu Tafida, the recently appointed State Chairman, thanked party members for their trust in him during his acceptance speech and promised to work hard to further the party’s goals in the state.
