To alleviate overcrowding in the current custodial and correctional facilities, the Yobe State Government intends to build four remand homes in select local government districts throughout the state. In addition, Barma Shattima, the State Commissioner for Sports, Social, and Community Development, announced that four more remand homes and a custodial center for juvenile suspects awaiting trial would be built in the towns of Damaturu, Nguru, Gashua, and Geidam.
He pointed out that the remand homes in Nguru and Gashua were in poor condition, making the Potiskum home the only one in the state that was still in operation.
Inmates would have access to education, vocational training, and other resources in the proposed remand homes, he continued, to help them become contributing members of society after their release.
The commissioner bemoaned the fact that the Potiskum remand home costs the state government more than N14 million a year to maintain.
