18 undocumented Nigerian migrants were transferred by Libyan authorities from the Sirte Immigration Detention Center to Sabha, a city in the south, where they are anticipated to be repatriated.
A humanitarian monitoring organization called Migrant Rescue Watch confirmed the development in a statement, stating that the transfer occurred Monday under the direction of the Libyan Department for Combating Illegal Migration (DCIM).
The group claims that the migrants were driven in a convoy under security control, as part of Libya’s larger plan to make it easier for foreigners without legal status to return home.
Despite years of unrest and conflict, Libya continues to be a major departure point for migrants attempting to reach Europe across the Mediterranean Sea.
Many undocumented migrants are frequently detained in the nation’s detention facilities while they await deportation or repatriation.
To give migrants the opportunity to return to their home countries, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has teamed up with Libyan authorities to organize voluntary repatriation flights in recent years.
