Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a controversial Islamic cleric, has implied that he and other pastors are no longer able to bargain with bandits.
Gumi criticised the Nigerian government’s choice to designate bandits as terrorists.
In a recent viral video, Islamic scholars were known to visit criminals in their hideouts.
“We don’t want to push them into terror beyond what they are doing now because it can get worse,” he stated.
“People who are prepared to negotiate, why are you rushing to declare them bandits so that you can use whatever weapons you purchased? They have demonstrated their willingness to negotiate.”
“They used to apprehend Boko Haram and turn them over to the Zamfara government, but now they are all terrorists.
Second, the only door left is for us clergy to enter and engage in negotiations with them; otherwise, it will be permanently closed.
