Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor and minister of transportation, has been formally announced by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the party’s vice presidential candidate for the general election of 2027.
Amaechi will therefore be Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the presidential election.
Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, signed a statement making the announcement.
The full statement is as follows: “The National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is pleased to announce that the Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has been chosen as our great party’s vice presidential candidate for the 2027 presidential election, following extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women stakeholders, and representatives of all geopolitical zones.”
This recommendation comes after the ADC Presidential Primaries concluded successfully, with Rt. Hon. Amaechi emerging as the runner-up, garnering broad support from party members throughout the federation and proving his enduring appeal as one of Nigeria’s most seasoned and well-respected political leaders.
“His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi’s proposed partnership is more than just a political alliance; it is the union of two seasoned statesmen with the experience, national reach, and leadership ability necessary to save Nigeria from its present problems and reposition the nation for a new era of prosperity, security, and inclusive development.”
One of the most extensive public service records in modern Nigerian politics is brought to this ticket by Rt. Hon. Amaechi. All of the main tenets of democratic governance are covered by his experience. He was one of the longest-serving legislative leaders in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, having distinguished himself as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
After that, he was governor of Rivers State for two terms, during which he oversaw large investments in public sector reforms, infrastructure, education, and healthcare. He oversaw some of Nigeria’s most significant rail and transportation modernisation projects while serving as the country’s minister of transportation.
These days, very few Nigerian political figures have such broad and well-rounded experience in both the legislative and executive branches of government. The next ADC administration will benefit greatly from this breadth of experience from the outset.
In addition to his outstanding qualifications, Rt. Hon. Amaechi strategically fortifies the ticket. He is in a unique position to support Atiku Abubakar’s candidature because of his political clout throughout the South-South and larger Southern Nigeria, his standing as a reform-minded administrator, and his track record of forming coalitions across political, ethnic, and regional divides.
Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi together represent a genuinely national ticket that unites political traditions, geographical areas, and generations. Their combined background in public administration, party organisation, economic management, governance, and nation-building presents Nigerians with a convincing and credible alternative that can boost national development and rebuild trust in the government.
“The Atiku-Amaechi ticket sends a clear message: the ADC is prepared to govern, prepared to unite the nation, and prepared to deliver results at a time when millions of Nigerians are demanding competent leadership, economic revival, job creation, security, and national unity.”
The ADC’s leadership is optimistic that this collaboration will boost our expanding coalition, give Nigerians hope, and supply the leadership required to create a more powerful, secure, and prosperous Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“As we set out on this historic journey to renew our nation and secure a better future for generations to come, the ADC therefore calls on all party members, coalition partners, civil society organisations, youth groups, women leaders, and Nigerians of goodwill to join us.”
