Another of Caleb Mutfwang’s relatives, Brigadier General John Sunday Sura (rtd), has selected the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms to run for the Plateau State governorship on the platform of the African Democratic Congress, or ADC, casting doubt on Mutfwang’s anticipated easy reelection in 2027.
Sura, who lives in the same Mangu Local Government Area as Mutfwang, submitted the ADC governorship application to the party leadership at the Abuja national headquarters on Monday.
Speaking during the presentation, Sura expressed faith in the electoral process and promised to present new concepts meant to promote development and bring peace back to the state.
The retired Army General, who recently resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), stated that the pressing need to combat insecurity, advance economic prosperity, and restore peaceful coexistence was the driving force behind his decision to run for governor.
“The safety of people and property, prosperity, and the conviction to establish Plateau as a haven for mutually beneficial coexistence among the good people of Plateau State and beyond are what matter now on the Plateau,” Sura stated.
“This will be the beginning of the best collective movement for the new Plateau State,” the retired Army chief turned politician stated, expressing optimism that his political movement would usher in a new phase of collective progress. My goals are focused on what is important to the state’s citizens right now rather than on my own interests.
Political observers in the state view Sura’s candidature for governor as a litmus test for Mutfwang because they believe it will reduce his political base because the election would split the votes.
Prior to Sura’s arrival, Sunny Garba Biggs and Jude Eli Dakur, two other well-known Mangu politicians, had also left the APC to seek governorships in other political parties.
Biggs has since announced his candidature on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but Dakur, a former close friend of the governor, has set up camp with the ADC, where he has also announced his desire to become governor.
Former Commissioner of Education and Mineral Development Dakur left the APC in April 2026 and has since started his campaign, which many see as a serious threat to Mutfwang’s second term because Dakur is one of Mangu’s most well-liked politicians. In 2027, it is thought that he will undoubtedly split Muftwang’s votes.
