Itodo Vincent, a civil society activist and public affairs analyst, has cautioned against using Nigeria’s insecurity problems as a political tool before the country’s general elections in 2027.
This was revealed by Vincent in a statement on Monday.
His remarks coincide with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu being given a six-month deadline to put an end to insecurity by House of Representatives minority leader Fred Agbedi.
Additionally, President Tinubu was urged by the minority leader to halt any political activity.
Nigerians responded to Agbedi’s comments with both admiration and censure.
In response, Vincent said that Agbedi’s comment was regrettable and useless.
He stated that although worries about insecurity are real and require immediate attention, it was improper for high-ranking political figures to take advantage of the situation for party ends.
According to the public affairs expert, Nigeria’s security issues precede the present administration and need for cooperation from the government, security services, communities, and political stakeholders.
Hon. Fred Agbedi’s decision to politicise a matter as delicate as national security is regrettable. Nigerians anticipate constructive participation and workable solutions from political leaders rather than partisan rhetoric.
It is dangerous and unworthy of a statesman for a minority leader in office to give the president what amounts to an ultimatum, suggesting that he should step down if security issues are not resolved within six months. Security should not be reduced to a platform for political posturing; rather, it is a shared responsibility. Inflammatory remarks are not what Nigerians need right now; instead, they need ideas, collaboration, and support for continuing efforts to strengthen security and economic stability,” he said.
