The ruling All Progressives Congress, or APC, may be overstretching its political approach ahead of upcoming elections, according to Sumner Sambo, Political Editor at Arise News.
Speaking on The Morning Show on Monday, Sambo cautioned against what he called the party’s overconfidence, pointing out that the results of the most recent general election revealed a closely contested battle.
He emphasized that the APC’s current strategy would backfire and contended that it would be terrible political strategy for the party to assume an easy victory in next polls.
He claims that the APC’s approach seems to have unintentionally inspired opposition leaders to unite behind a single agenda.
He cited prominent opposition figures, such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, whose supporters, he pointed out, obtained outcomes that were comparable to those of President Bola Tinubu in the previous election.
According to Sambo, maintaining opposition blocs’ fragmentation rather than allowing them to come together would have been the president’s best course of action.
“I will simply ask that they not be overconfident in the political process,” Sambo stated. Because based on the outcomes of the most recent election, I believe it would be bad politics for them to assume that the president will just win. They seem to be over-strategizing in the APC and are trying too hard, in my opinion.
“I mean, if you’re not over-strategizing, explain to me how you would be a highly skilled political strategist and then let all of your opponents who received votes that were significantly closer to you in the previous general election come together under a single political platform.
“I believed that President Tinubu’s wisest political move would be to guarantee that these groups—the Peter Obi group, the Atiku group, and the Kwankwaso group—remain in their current positions.
“It may appear that President Tinubu will find it much easier to coast home, but whatever politics the presidency and the APC-led federal government are engaging in have caused all the opposition to unite and form a single platform, including the smaller opposition leaders who do not wish to unite, to be considering uniting against the APC.”
“I believe the APC has exaggerated itself. I believe that President Tinubu has handled politics so deftly that, if he doesn’t exercise caution, it could hurt his numbers in the upcoming election.
“Because it was more of a narrow escape for President Tinubu in the previous elections if you look at how close the figures were. Furthermore, I believe that he would not have permitted all of these individuals and other organizations to come together.
“I believe that the strategies are being overused. Thus, APC strategists should reconsider and exercise caution.
