Timi Frank, the former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, has alleged a plot to assassinate former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 general elections. Frank argues that the sudden withdrawal of all police personnel attached to Atiku, despite his legal entitlement as a former Vice President, is highly suspicious and intended to expose him to danger, especially amid high national insecurity. He pointed out that no previous administration has tampered with Atiku’s security despite his consistent opposition role, questioning why it is happening now. Frank dismissed the government’s claim that this is part of a broad withdrawal of 11,566 officers from VIPs (following President Tinubu’s directive to redeploy them to core policing duties), stating that the general withdrawal is a smokescreen and Atiku is the main target. Frank claimed the real goal is to isolate and eliminate Atiku before the 2027 election, comparing the move to dangerous political trends in Africa where incumbent leaders silence opponents. He challenged the government to prove the withdrawal is general by also stripping security from the President’s family and political appointees.
