A fire at Shuwaki Market in Kano State’s Gari Local Government Area destroyed 529 temporary stalls, according to the Kano State Fire Service.
Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, the Fire Service Public Relations Officer, told reporters the agency received an emergency call around 3:25 p.m. His team quickly deployed to the scene and worked to stop the fire from spreading across the large market area.
Of the roughly 1,000 temporary stalls in the market, 529 were completely burnt.
Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident. Saminu Abdullahi stated the fire was likely caused by the activities of drunk individuals who were staying within the market premises.
He concluded by urging residents and traders to be cautious with fire and flammable materials to prevent future tragedies.
